Stuttering Therapy
If you or someone you care about stutters, don’t despair. Stuttering can be treated successfully. In fact, there
are many different types of stuttering therapy techniques, so there is sure to be one that works
for you. Let’s look at a few of them here.
Stuttering is a speech disorder. A good starting point is to schedule an appointment with your family doctor, so
he can access the stutterer. Stuttering treatment will likely be ongoing for a period of time, so it’s a good idea
to have your doctor involved as soon as possible.
He can then suggest possible therapies that are available, as well as initiating referrals to community services
when needed. If medication is an option, you’ll have to work closely with a doctor anyway. He can also help monitor
the progress of treatment options.
Speech Therapy
Speech therapy for stuttering is often the first type of therapy that is recommended. It is especially effective
when used with young children. So much learning already goes on in the life of a child, and because of their
interaction with teachers, speech therapists find them easy to work with.
The first step is for the speech therapist to design a treatment program based on the needs of the stutterer.
Once the plan is in place, the speech therapy begins. It works best if parents can help at home by following
through with specific suggestions from the therapist.
Relaxation Techniques
Many stutterers find that their stutter becomes worse when they are feeling stressed or anxious. It’s almost
impossible to avoid these situations all the time, so a good plan is to develop some relaxation techniques.
Some relaxation techniques, such as proper breathing can help to reduce stress when it’s occurring. If for
example, you know you have to talk to your boss about an issue, the thought of doing this may be stressful.
Breathing the right way before you have to speak can help.
Other relaxation techniques are designed to reduce anxiety generally and help you to feel more relaxed
generally. These are things like yoga or meditation.
Drug Therapy
Currently, there are few medications available to treat stuttering. They are mainly prescribed for those with
severe cases of stuttering and work to minimize stuttering.
Your doctor may prescribe stuttering medication if he believes that the cause of your stuttering is physical.
Anti-depressants may be prescribed if the doctor thinks that the cause of stuttering is emotional.
